Double Stuffed

Double Stuffed from Exotic Genetix is a cross of Platinum White and Cookies & Cream. It has an intense creaminess with notes of spiced chai. The plant produces tight buds that purple as they mature. This indica dominant cross is a combination of light greens and purples and typically tests in the high 20’s. Similar to the Cookies and Cream, this will not disappoint those looking for a Cookies strain. Patients have found success with this strain for pain management, anxiety and insomnia.

Double Tangie Banana

Double Tangie Banana is a cross of Tangie and Tangie x Banana OG. The Tangie remains dominant in this cross. Sweet Tangerine fruit accompanied by a lingering banana taffy aroma make up this powerful profile. Strong citrus and banana terpenes linger when handling Double Tangie Banana. The smell permeates into adjacent spaces and remains present upon inhale. One of our highest testing terpene profiles with flowers leaning towards a sativa structure, greasy nuggets that foxtail as they finish giving the flowers a triangular shape. Patients have found this strain helpful for anxiety, headaches and fatigue. Many have reported a euphoric and uplifting experience.

Strawberry Fields is a cross of Strawberry Banana and Tangie by Crockett Family Farms. This fruity, flavorful strain is a concentrate makers top choice. This batch does not boast a high THC content but surely delivers great flavor and effects. The smell ranges from strawberry to a sweet citrus berry. An extremely stable batch with much clarity and spectacular color shows the care that was taken when harvesting, curing and preparing the flowers for extraction.

Featured Strains: Black Jack and Star Kush

This week’s featured strains are Black Jack and Star Kush, two excellent genetics with contrasting effects. Black Jack is an uplifting strain suited towards daytime symptom relief, while Star Kush is a potent indica-dominant hybrid patients have found helpful for relaxation and pain relief.

Star Kush is a cross between Stardawg and Nigerian Kush, developed by the legendary breeders at Top Dawg Seeds. We selected a Stardawg-dominant phenotype that heavily displays the classic Chemdawg genetics the strain was named for. Pine, menthol, fuel, and pepper flavors are all present, followed by a sweet raspberry finish with some notes of garlic. Testing off the charts for both terpenes and cannabinoids, this strain is a standout cultivar. Not much to look at, Star Kush has small calyxes, tight buds, light pink to red hairs and a light green flower. Still, our Star Kush carries a thick funk that will please anyone with a palette for East Coast Chemdawg and Diesel varieties. Stardawg Kush is one of our most potent fuel strains and currently the closest we can offer to an original Chemdawg variety. Patients have found relief from stress and anxiety, as well as joint and muscle pain.

Black Jack is a cross of Black Domina and Jack Herer. Reminiscent of an original Jack Herer, this will take those familiar with classic Jack on a brief trip through time. The aroma has sweet fruit, citrus and woody pine terpenes. Similar to a sweet carbonated soda, with hints of sage and pineapple, this plant provides a relaxed, functional and uplifting experience. Black Jack displays some sativa structure and effects, with large triangular buds that are very dense and full. Patients have found relief from anxiety and nausea, as well as an active, creative boost. A very strong cannabinoid profile without the couchlock or heaviness sometimes associated with high potency strains.

Through their unique and competing attributes, Black Jack and Star Kush represent different eras in the evolution of modern cannabis genetics. Black Jack’s large, pointed flowers and old school aroma are reminiscent of the Dutch coffeeshop scene that predates contemporary dispensaries, while Star Kush evokes the fuel-tinged flavor popularized by Sour Diesel, Chemdawg and OG Kush that put American genetics on the map and delights patients at today’s dispensaries. Both have a great deal to offer patients, and together are great examples of how large of a role the terpene profile plays in the effect of the flower.

Can Cannabis Medicines Replace Opioids for Pain Relief?

Opioid-based medicines exist for the well-intended purpose of helping patients treat severe and chronic pain, but their drawbacks are becoming a cause of serious concern. Widespread problems with dependency, abuse, and overdoses are leading many to reconsider these commonly prescribed medications and seek safer alternatives. It should come as no surprise that medical cannabis is playing a prominent role in the conversation about how to create healthier and more sustainable solutions for patients in pain:

A handful of drugmakers are taking their first steps toward developing marijuana-based painkillers, alternatives to opioids that have led to widespread abuse and caused the U.S. health regulator to ask for a withdrawal of a popular drug this month.

The cannabis plant has been used for decades to manage pain and there are increasingly sophisticated marijuana products available across 29 U.S. states, as well as in the District of Columbia, where medical marijuana is legal.

There are no U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA)-approved painkillers derived from marijuana, but companies such as Axim Biotechnologies, Nemus Bioscience and Intec Pharma have drugs in various stages of development. [Fortune]

Though medical cannabis is widely viewed as an alternative to pharmaceutical drugs, there exists tremendous potential for cannabis to become a pivotal factor in the development of future prescription medications. The expanding availability of medical cannabis products through state-regulated programs has demonstrated a range of benefits, including a reputation for safety among patients that contrasts sharply with that of prescription opioid drugs. Rather than viewing cannabis as competition, it makes sense that pharmaceutical companies are beginning to embrace its positive reputation and potential to replace medicines whose dangers are becoming increasingly clear.

Through our own experience working with patients suffering from severe pain, it’s easy to understand why so many are seeking alternatives to opioids. Chronic conditions require long-term treatment and patients frequently report to us that extended use of strong prescription pain relievers created serious consequences for them. We’ve heard from patients who developed problems with dependency and others whose doctors recommended medical cannabis because their continuing use of opioids was becoming hazardous to their health. Moreover, many patients have observed that they simply feel healthier and more alert when using medical cannabis to treat their pain.

As new states continue to launch regulated medical cannabis programs and pharmaceutical companies begin to explore cannabis-based approaches, new opportunities emerge to examine what roles cannabis medicine can play in providing a safer treatment option for patients in pain. Glossary of Medical Marijuana & Dispensary Terms

Whether you’re new to medical marijuana or simply new to the experience of obtaining cannabis from a licensed dispensary, you may notice some unfamiliar terms being used by patients and staff at the facility. The following guide covers many of the terms we use frequently at the dispensary from day to day. Learning these terms may help you better understand the key components of the cannabis plant, as well as the types of products we offer and how they are used:

Accessories: Items such as pipes, grinders, and jars that are used to administer, process, or store medical cannabis products.

Cannabinoids: Compounds containing within the cannabis plant, which activate receptors in the brain to produce medicinal effects.

Cannabis: This is the technical term for marijuana. Both words can be used interchangeably and refer to the same plant.

CBD (Cannabidiol): An important medicinal cannabinoid found in the cannabis plant, with non-psychoactive effects.

Clone: A cutting from a cannabis plant, which is replanted to produce a new plant with identical genetics.

CO2: The chemical formula for carbon dioxide, which is commonly used to produce cannabis extracts.

Curing: A slow, controlled drying process designed to maximize the quality of cannabis flowers.

Edible: A cannabis-infused food item, such as baked goods, chocolates, or lozenges.

Flowers: The blooming buds of the cannabis plant, where the largest concentration of medicinal components are contained.

Grinder: A tool used to grind cannabis in preparation for smoking, vaporizing, or cooking without damaging resin glands.

Hash: A form of concentrated cannabis made by extracting and filtering resin glands from the leaves of a harvested plant.

Haze: An influential and historic cannabis genetic used to create many popular strains. Several varieties of Haze are commonly seen on dispensary menus, usually in the sativa category.

Hybrid: A term for cannabis strains that combine sativa and indica to produce a balance between cerebral and physical effects.

Indica: A term for cannabis strains known for their relaxing physical effects.

Kush: A popular variety of cannabis named for the Hindu Kush Mountains in Afghanistan. Several varieties of Kush are commonly seen on dispensary menus, usually in the hybrid and indica categories.

One-hitter: A small, cigarette-shaped pipe that’s convenient and easy to use.

Pre-roll: These are simply small cigarette-like cones that contain only medical cannabis.

Sativa: A term for cannabis strains known for their energizing cerebral effects and mood-elevation.

Shake: A term for the small pieces of plant material that separate from cannabis during processing. Shake contains a high cannabinoid content, but is sold at a discount.

Shatter: A high-quality cannabis concentrate named for its hard surface and ability to break when bent.

Skunk: A historic strain of cannabis named for its strong aroma. Many varieties of Skunk are commonly found on dispensary menus.

Spoon: A popular style of glass pipe, used to smoke cannabis. Named for its spoon-like shape.

Strain: A specific variety of cannabis with it’s own name and unique attributes.

Terpenes: Aromatic oils contained in cannabis and other plants which influence the smell, flavor, and effects of individual strains.

THC (Tetrahydrocannabinol): The best-known cannabinoid found in the cannabis plant, which is responsible for the majority of its medicinal effects.

Tincture: A liquid solution infused with cannabis which is administered by placing under the tongue or mixing into a beverage.

Topical: A non-psychoactive cannabis preparation such as a lotion or balm that is rubbed into the skin for localized symptom relief.

Trichomes: The sparkling resin glands appearing on the outside of cannabis flowers, where cannabinoid content is most concentrated. These are sometimes also referred to as crystals.

Trim: The leaves that surround cannabis flowers, which are often converted into concentrates such as hash and tincture.

Vape cartridge: A pre-filled product containing cannabis concentrate designed for vaporization.

Vaporizer: An electronic device that heats cannabis for inhalation without producing smoke.

Water-pipe: A popular style of pipe in which bubbles of smoke pass though a chamber of water prior to inhalation.

Featured Strains: Cookies and Cream & Grease Monkey

This week we’re featuring two popular strains from the expert breeders at Exotic Genetix, Cookies and Cream & Grease Monkey. Our cultivation team works tirelessly to produce the best flowers possible and we appreciate every opportunity to share our knowledge with patients and hear your personal feedback.

Cookies and Cream is a cross of Mystery Cookies and Starfighter F2 from Exotic Genetix. The result is a Cookies-dominant plant with earthy and fuel notes. Patients familiar with the Cookies strains will recognize its structure, characterized by dense flowers with large trichome covered calyxes. A striking contrast between the white frost and the dark black leaves catches the eye immediately, making it a must try for Cookies fans. Creamy subtleties add a smooth air to the wafting aroma of deep earth. Some phenotypes lean more towards the fuel aroma, while others are a bit more on the creamy/earthy side of the spectrum. Although we’re still choosing our mother plant, each example in our current harvest is top quality and reasonably similar in character.

The Cookies and Cream strain is recommended for those who like OG, Gorilla Glue, Cookies and other Kush genetics. Patients can expect heavy indica-dominant effects and high potency, which may provide relief from chronic pain, anxiety and insomnia. We also have a number of Cookies and Cream crosses in our roster and this flower has many dominant traits that can be recognized in its progeny, so be sure to check out Lemon Meringue (Lemon Skunk x Cookies and Cream) and Extreme Cream (Extreme OG x Cookies and Cream) as well.

Grease Monkey is a cross of Gorilla Glue #4 and Cookies and Cream from Exotic Genetix. This Gorilla Glue cross has a dominant fuel aroma and flavor, along with hints of grape and citrus. Our selections lean towards the Gorilla Glue side of the cross, with added color, depth and sweetness from the Starfighter. Patients can expect dense and colorful buds, many of which exhibit purple hues as they mature. Round and full calyxes along with significant resin production are both reminiscent of the Gorilla Glue genetics as well. Grease Monkey is recommended for those seeking relief from nausea, pain and anxiety. It’s also sure to please any patients who prefer the rich flavor and effects of Diesel and Kush dominant genetics.

Both of this week’s featured strains are relatively new to our facility and while we are still making our final phenotype selections, we’ve been very happy with the results so far. Please be aware of the plant number, as this indicates the specific phenotype; any patient feedback between phenotypes is greatly appreciated and will be taken into account as we make our final selections.
