Eligibility
Dr. Recommendation
The first step is to obtain your doctor recommendation. When discussing medical marijuana with your doctor, it’s important to be honest about your health situation and explain why you believe this treatment will be beneficial for you. If your doctor agrees to give you a medical marijuana recommendation, they will need to complete and submit an electronic patient certification to the Medical Use of Marijuana Program. Doctors who have not yet signed up with the program can do so by following these instructions.
Note: If your doctor is unwilling to give you a medical marijuana recommendation, please contact us for further assistance.
Patient Application
Following certification by your recommending physician, you’ll receive an email which includes your unique 4-digit PIN number and instructions on completing your online patient application. The online registration process includes two parts:
Virtual Gateway:
In this section, you’ll be asked to create an account and scan your photo ID. You’ll then receive a confirmation email which allows you to set up your patient account. To access the Virtual Gateway and get started, click here.
MMJ Online System:
You’ll receive an email link to the MMJ Online System after completing the steps in the Virtual Gateway. In this section, you’ll be asked to upload your photo ID and a current passport-style photo that will appear on your patient ID card. If you have a photo on file with the Massachusetts RMV, you’ll be able to retrieve and upload that photo through the online system. If you’re uploading your own photo, you’ll need to click “browse,” select the file, and then click “proceed” to complete the upload. You’ll also be asked to pay the $50 application fee or submit proof of low-income status to request a waiver. The final step is reviewing and submitting your completed application.
If you need more information, click here for a detailed guide to the online application process. Please note that a paper application option is available for patients who cannot use the online system. You may obtain a paper application by calling (617) 660-5370. Be advised that paper applications typically have a longer processing time than those submitted electronically.
